• Since retirement in 2008, Ms Herfkens has -consulted to international organizations, e.g. World Bank, OECD/DAC, ILO, AfDB; -been a Board member for international NGOs; -lectured on economic and social development
• 2002-8: UN MDGs Campaign: Founder, Executive Coordinator 
• 1998-2002: Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation 
o Ms Herfkins widened the influence of Dutch assistance policies by helping establish the Utstein Group consisting of the Dutch, German, British and Norwegian Ministers for Development Cooperation. The group’s work influenced global efforts against poverty. She received international recognition and was awarded the first annual Commitment to Development Award by the Center for Global Development in 2003

• 1996-98: Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands, UN and WTO in Geneva 
o Ms Herfkens helped to establish the Integrated Framework for Trade Related Assistance, a coordinating mechanism for trade related assistance to poor countries that continues to be the focus of international efforts

• 1990-6: World Bank Board of Executive Directors 
• 1981-90: Member of the Dutch Parliament

Ms Herfkens participated in international advisory and coordinating groups on development, e.g. -ILO World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization; - UN Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa, -ILO/WHO Social Protection Floor Advisory Group. She has also authored many articles and op-eds on aid, trade and development
