Juan Carlos VASQUEZ
Legal Affairs and Trade Policy Unit of the CITES Secretariat - United Nations Environment Programme
Juan Carlos Vasquez is a Colombian lawyer with postgraduate studies at the University of Geneva. Actually, he is the Chief of the Legal and Trade Policy Officer Unit in the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). His unit provide assistance to CITES member States in the development of wildlife trade policies and national CITES legislation. Mr Vasquez ties to the CITES Secretariat back to 1995. He has been responsible for legal affairs, outreach, fund-raising, private sector engagement and the relationship with WTO, ITC, UNCTAD and other relevant institutions.
Before joining CITES, Mr Vasquez worked as an international consultant in environmental law, legal adviser in rural development at the Ministry of Agriculture of Colombia, lawyer of Indigenous and Afro-American communities for Fundepublico and licensed attorney in a private law firm.
