Prof. Oliver RUPPEL

Director of the Development and Rule of Law Programme, Stellenbosch University

Prof. Oliver Ruppel is the Director of the Development and Rule of Law Programme (DROP) at Stellenbosch University and a Professor Extraordinaire at several universities around the world. Until 2010 he held one of the worldwide 14 academic chairs of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Geneva, Switzerland, which he established at the University of Namibia, Windhoek, where he had previously also served as the Director of the national Human Rights and Documentation Centre. He currently serves as Coordinating Lead Author for “Africa” in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was only recently appointed as a member of the International Conservations Union (IUCN) World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL). He is a member of various editorial boards and also of the South African Branch of the Association for International Law (SABILA). He specializes in WTO law, sustainable development law and diplomacy.
